Pretty scary statistics. It seems that where skin cancer is concerned, knowledge is power! Skin cancer is nearly always curable if caught in early stages and is largely preventable. Periodic self-examination and responsible use of sun protection are the most valuable weapons available in the battle against skin cancer.
What to look for- moles or pigmented spots with...
- A- Assymetry: one half is unlike the other half.
- B- Border irregularities: poorly defined borders.
- C- Color variations: differing shades of tan, brown, black, and sometimes white, red, or blue.
- D- Diameter: larger than 6mm (diameter of a pencil eraser)- although some smaller spots can be dangerous.
- E-Evolving: changes in size, color, or border.
If there are doubts after a self-examination, it is important to see a dermatologist and get the spot checked.
